Brenda Holloway 1965 – Operator

Brenda Holloway (born June 21, 1946) is an African-American singer and songwriter best known for her period as a recording artist for the Motown label during the 1960s and is best known for the soulful hits, “Every Little Bit Hurts” and “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”, which later became a pop smash by Blood, Sweat & Tears.Born in Atascadero, California, Brenda grew up in the Watts section of Los Angeles where she took up violin and sung in her church choir. At 14, she and sister Patrice Holloway began working on demonstration records and singing backup for local L.A.-based R&B acts. In 1962, Brenda made her recording debut with the single, “Hey Fool”. Two years later, she recorded the song that she would later be famously known for in the coming decades, “Every Little Bit Hurts”. [edit] The Motown years After being overheard singing Mary Wells’ “My Guy”, Motown Records CEO Berry Gordy signed her to the label’s Tamla imprint. For her first single, she was required to re-record “Every Little Bit Hurts” much to the budding singer-songwriter’s chagrin. Released in May of 1964, “Every Little Bit Hurts” became a smash hit for Holloway reaching number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 helping to win the singer a concert spot on Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars tour. Holloway followed “Every Little Bit Hurts” with the more modest follow-up, “I Will Always Love You”, before hitting the top forty again with the number 25 pop hit, “When I’m Gone”, released shortly after now-former Motown star Mary Wells’ Motown contract expired. Wells ironically recorded “When I’m Gone” before Holloway. After its success, Motown produced Holloway with songs that were originally recorded by Wells including “Operator” and “I’ll Be Available”. Holloway became a fixture to several sixties television shows including Shindig! and later was asked by The Beatles to open for them on their U.S. tour in 1966. Holloway performed in the first rock stadium concert at Shea Stadium for the Beatles as their opening act. Holloway was only one of three female acts who opened for the Beatles including Mary Wells and Jackie DeShannon. Despite her modest success, Holloway felt out of place at the Detroit-based label. Being the first West Coast-based artist on the label, she also was one of the few female artists in Motown to write her own songs and had a much grittier approach to songs than her contemporaries in the label. Between 1966 and early 1968, Holloway recorded a string of singles that was to be put on her second album, Hurtin’ & Cryin’. Its first single was “Just Look What You’ve Done”, which hit the top 30 on the R&B chart. Its follow-up would have a stronger span: the Holloway co-penned “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”, was one of the few singles written by Holloway allowed to be released. Upon its release, the single peaked at number 40 on the pop chart and number 39 on the R&B chart. Its momentum was stopped when Holloway suddenly left Motown in 1968. A year later, Holloway received royalties for “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” when jazz-rock troupe Blood, Sweat & Tears took it to number 2 on the US pop chart and the top 40 in the UK. A year afterwards, Holloway retired from performing. [edit] Later years For more than ten years, Holloway married a pastor and became a housewife while occasionally singing with her sister Patricia. In 1980, Holloway briefly stepped out of retirement to record a gospel album. Eventually divorcing her husband shortly afterward, Holloway returned to performing secular music in 1988 recording for the UK label, Motorcity Records, which often worked on material for former Motown artists. In 1990, Holloway issued the album, All It Takes. After the 1992 death of her friend, Mary Wells, from throat cancer, Holloway broke out of retirement from performing and has since kept a healthy performing schedule while recording sporadically. Her most current album being a 2003 recording, My Love is Your Love. Her vocals, alongside her sister’s, were prominently featured in the background of Joe Cocker’s hit version of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends”, which was later used as the theme song for “The Wonder Years”. In the UK, she’s regarded as a “Northern Soul legend” while in the U.S., she’s often considered the “lost” Motown artist among other Motown acts that didn’t get the recognition that many felt they deserved. Regardless, she is looked upon as a “sixties Motown legend” by her legion of fans. Holloway’s singles have been re-recorded, most notably her first hit, which is regarded as a soul classic.

‘Unknown group’ in Lebanon launches rockets at Israel

???? ??????? ????????: ??? ???? ??? ??????? ??? ??? ????? ?? ????? ???????? ??? ??????? Several rockets fired from Lebanon have hit northern Israel, Israeli police say. At least three rockets landed in the town of Nahariya, about 8km south of the Lebanese border, on Thursday causing slight injuries. The attack was followed by reports of a second missile strike, but officials later said it was a false alarm. The Israeli military fired mortars into southern Lebanon in response to the initial attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in southern Israel, said analysts were suggesting that the rocket attack could have been carried out by Palestinians in southern Lebanon. She said the firing of rockets from Lebanon “could mean the opening of a second front” in the war on Gaza which has left at least 700 Palestinians dead. Military alert The Israeli military has been on alert in the north since it intensified the Gaza offensive, which it says is aimed at stopping rocket and mortar attacks by Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip. “We took into account there would be an attempt by Palestinian groups to express solidarity,” Shalom Simchon, an Israeli cabinet minister, said. Lebanon is home to more than 400,000 Palestinian refugees, according to UN figures. Al Jazeera’s James Bays, reporting from northern Israel, said one of the rockets hit a retirement home. “The residents of the home are very distressed by what has happened,” he said. “People here haven’t got to the stage they have in the south where many people have left their homes.” Hamas denial The Palestinian Hamas group, which has been targeted by the ongoing Israeli aerial and ground assault on Gaza, denied it carried out the attack from southern Lebanon. “Hamas is pursuing its combat inside Palestine and our principle is not to use any other Arab soil to respond to the occupation,” Raafat Morra, a Hamas spokesman, told the AFP news agency. Tarek Mitri, Lebanon’s information minister, said the Hezbollah movement, which fought a war with Israel in 2006, had made it clear it was not behind the rocket attack. “Hezbollah has assured us that they remain committed to stability and Resolution 1701 and that is a euphemism for saying they are not involved,” he said, referring the UN Security Council resolution that ended the conflict. The last time Katyushas were fired from Lebanon was in June 2007. Hezbollah denied responsibility and Israel blamed an unnamed Palestinian group. Andrea Tenenti, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, told Al Jazeera it was “taking immediate measures to identify the perpetrators of the attack”. “Additional troops have been deployed on the ground and patrols have been intensified across all our areas of operation to prevent any further incidents,” he said. Conflict warning On Wednesday, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, warned that “all possibilities” were open against Israel as he gave a speech condemning Israel’s offensive in Gaza and voicing support for Hamas. About 1,200 mostly Lebanese civilians were killed as the Shia Muslim movement fought the Israeli military. Addressing tens of thousands of supporters via video link at his stronghold in Beirut’s suburbs, Nasrallah said: “I say to [Ehud] Olmert [Israel's prime minister], the loser, the vanquished in Lebanon that ‘you cannot overcome Hamas or Hezbollah’.” The comments marked the first time he has spoken so openly on the possibility of a renewed conflict with Israel since the war in Gaza began on December 27. Nasrallah warned that the 2006 conflict would be “but a walk in the park” compared to what awaits Israel if it launches a new offensive on Lebanon. “We have to act as though all possibilities are real and open [against Israel] and we must always be ready for any eventuality. “We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in.”
