Ready and Willing, But Unable? A New Survey Examines Sex and Relationships for Baby Boomers With children leaving the nest and retirement on the horizon, older Americans are finding more time to focus on themselves and their relationships. But with the general physical changes that come with age, a lot of older men and women are finding it harder to maintain an intimate relationship. The recent “Sex, Menopause and Relationships” survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, revealed sex and communication are important to adults ages 50-70 and to their overall relationship satisfaction. However, the majority of adults surveyed agreed that decreased frequency, physical ability and desire for sex are to be expected with age. While both men and women agree that men are more likely to experience physical symptoms that decrease their ability to have sex, more women are reporting having experienced sexual symptoms as they age. In fact, 65 percent of women compared to 51 percent of men said they experienced symptoms. Relationship experts say communication is key – and of those who have discussed symptoms with their partners, 75% reported overall relationship satisfaction; concluding that a fulfilling sexual relationship doesn’t have to end in your golden years.
